Working with one of our top financial clients, this role calls for an Accountant-Intermediate (Tax Specialist). This position involves managing the preparation and filing of intricate estate and trust income tax returns, providing technical expertise, and supporting ongoing administrative functions within a dynamic team environment.

Pay rate range (CAD): $36.23/hr – $43.48/hr

Responsibilities

  • Collect information from clients, internal and external sources to prepare and file income tax returns for estate and trust accounts.
  • Perform calculations, complete schedules, and organize data for complex returns.
  • Prepare personal, estate, and trust income tax returns and schedules with accuracy.
  • Identify post-mortem and other tax planning opportunities.
  • Review assessment notices, prepare adjustment requests, objection notices, and Clearance Certificates.
  • Correspond with CRA to provide requested information and resolve issues.
  • Maintain quality, responsiveness, and timeliness standards.
  • Liaise with trust staff, external tax professionals, and clients on income tax requirements and strategies.
  • Participate in special projects as assigned.
  • Manage and train junior staff members.
  • Review complex tax returns, such as GREs and terminal T1 returns.
  • Take ownership of assigned projects with limited supervision.

Desired Skill-Set

  • Minimum of 3+ years of experience in an accounting or tax-related role.
  • Proficiency in preparing T1, T1 terminal (final), T3 trusts, and estate returns.
  • Familiarity with graduated rate estates.
  • Post-secondary degree in accounting or equivalent.
  • Experience with tax preparation software, specifically Taxprep.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent analytical and tax research skills.
  • Effective communication skills for interacting with clients, professionals, and teams.
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple activities simultaneously.
  • Proactive with a strong initiative-taking mindset.

Nice to Have

  • CPA designation or working towards it.
  • Experience supporting individuals with lost capacity, T1 terminals, and estate/trust management.
  • Knowledge of CRA RepID, tax platforms, and FI systems.
  • Experience with deceased taxpayer scenarios.
  • Ability to communicate technical tax concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Collaborative mindset and strong decision-making skills.
