Working with one of our top financial clients, this role calls for a Senior Accountant-Tax Specialist. This position involves supporting day-to-day tax operations, overseeing complex estate and trust filings, reviewing tax returns, and providing technical expertise within a dynamic team environment. The successful candidate will bring extensive experience in estate and trust taxation, leadership capabilities, and a client-focused approach to ensure timely, accurate compliance and strategic tax planning.
Pay rate range (CAD): $43.48/hr – $52.17/hr
Responsibilities
- Prepare and review complex estate and trust tax returns, including T1, T1 terminal (final), T3 trusts, and estate filings.
- Manage and train junior staff, providing guidance on technical issues and workflow.
- Ensure timely completion of tax filings and compliance obligations.
- Liaise with clients, tax professionals, and internal teams to gather information and communicate tax strategies.
- Review assessment notices, prepare adjustments, and correspond with CRA to resolve inquiries.
- Identify tax planning opportunities post-mortem and during ongoing trust administration.
- Participate in special projects and process improvements to enhance team efficiency.
- Support estate and trust administration tasks, including GREs, rights & things, and clearance certificates.
- Maintain proficiency with CRA systems, tax software (such as Taxpreper), and internal platforms.
Desired Skill-Set
- 3-5+ years of experience in an accounting or tax-related role, specifically estate and trust taxation.
- Proficiency with T1, T1 terminal, T3 trust, and estate returns.
- Strong technical knowledge of estate and trust tax regulations and planning strategies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare detailed reports and correspondence.
- Proven leadership and decision-making abilities, with experience training or supervising junior staff.
- Strong attention to detail, analytical, and research skills.
- Proficient with tax software, paperless workflows, and CRA systems.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively within deadlines.
Nice to Have
- CPA designation or working towards CPA/CA certification.
- Experience with graduated rate estates and related benefits.
- Knowledge of retirement and estate planning products.
- Experience with estate administration support, including capacity-related issues and testamentary trusts.
- Familiarity with CRA RepID and other tax-related technology tools.
